New PC Troubleshooting Guide: Common Problems and Fixes

Most first-build problems are caused by a loose cable, incorrectly installed memory or a connection in the wrong port. Use this logical troubleshooting process before replacing parts.

The PC Does Not Turn On

Check that the power supply switch is on and that the power cable is fully inserted. Recheck the large motherboard power cable and the CPU power cable near the processor.

Confirm that the case power-switch connector is attached to the correct motherboard pins.

The PC Turns On but Shows No Display

  • Confirm the monitor is connected to the correct video output.
  • Check that the graphics card is fully inserted.
  • Remove and reinstall the memory modules.
  • Try starting with one memory module installed.
  • Check the motherboard diagnostic lights or display code.

The PC Restarts or Crashes

Unexpected restarts can be caused by overheating, unstable memory settings, insufficient power or a loose connection. Check CPU and graphics temperatures, restore default BIOS settings and confirm that all cooling fans are operating.

The System Is Overheating

Make sure the CPU cooler is firmly mounted and that its fan is connected to the CPU fan header. Confirm that the cooler has suitable thermal paste and that the case has both intake and exhaust airflow.

Troubleshooting rule: Change one thing at a time. If you change several components or settings together, it becomes much harder to identify the real cause.

Use a Minimal Test Build

If the system still fails, disconnect unnecessary drives, USB devices and expansion cards. Test with the motherboard, processor, cooler, one memory module, power supply and display output.

The Bottom Line

Start with simple physical checks, consult the motherboard indicators and test the system with only essential hardware connected.
